Petra is a DJ, dancer and event organizer based in Brooklyn, NY. She has been djing and throwing parties for more than ten years in NYC and the Bay Area.
Petra threw her first party at nineteen years old. Frustrated with a club scene that was hostile and dangerous for young women, she started throwing parties in apartments and backyards. In 2008, she inherited a collection of classic hip-hop records from a retired Washington Heights DJ and began studying the art and science of spinning records.
Since she has played across New York City and her native Bay Area, igniting dance floors from upscale clubs to dive bars, lavish weddings to intimate art galleries, massive warehouse raves to underground bashments. For 5 years, Petra was a resident at DJ Rekha’s monthly party Basement Bhangra at SOB’s (NYC), culminating in a finale SummerStage concert in Central Park. She held residencies at Friends & Lovers (Bk), Bembe (Bk), Pianos (NYC), Sutra (NYC) and Au Lounge (Oak). She’s played shows at The Ace Hotel (NYC), The Williamsburg Hotel (Bk), Webster Hall (NYC) Amazura Lounge (Queens), The New Parish (Oak) and a wide array of private parties at art galleries, lofts, boats, rooftops and pools. Petra produces nightlife events on both coasts - most recently Pull Up Brooklyn.
From 2009 to 2015, Petra hosted a weekly radio show “Hip-Hop & Her Family” on NYU’s college radio station WNYU 89.1FM. With her co-hosts Audrey Hails and Genesis Be, Petra interviewed artists like Goapele, Ruste Juxx, Hasan Salaam, Uncutt Art, and produced a series of live performance sets and freestyle cyphers. Alongside her weekly DJ sets, Petra hosted weekly guests, showcasing NYC’s finest DJs, including Natasha Diggs, Sabine Blaizin, DJ Autograph, Ritmo Equis, Chief Boima, DJ Gravy and others.
